San Marcos, Texas – Wes Davis slashed to the basket repeatedly, and Emani Gant was a presence on the low block, as the Texas State men's basketball team used its size advantage to beat UT Tyler, 73-54, Saturday at Strahan Coliseum.
Texas State was up 47-40 with 9:19 to go in the second half when Davis rattled off seven straight points for the Bobcats, beginning a 14-6 run. Davis had 11 of the team's 14 points during the run, and he finished with a team-high 16 points, one of three Bobcats with 16.
Gant provided the other offensive presence for the Bobcats, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the second half. He tied his season-high with 12 rebounds, including six offensive boards. It was his first double-double of the season, making it his second straight game with 16 points.
Joining Gant and Davis with 16 points on the night was senior point guard Phil Hawkins who had a season-high. Hawkins hit a floater from the free throw line right before halftime to give Texas State a 32-27 advantage headed into the break. Hawkins had 10 first half points, the most of any Bobcat in the first 20 minutes.
As a team, Texas State dominated the rebounding battle 47-21, its largest rebound margin of the season. The Bobcats owned a 42-18 advantage on points in the paint.
The Bobcats will now have nine days off before hosting Long Island in their last non-conference game of the season on Dec. 30, at 7:00 p.m.
