EL PASO, Texas -- A second-half rally by the Texas State women's basketball team proved to fall short on Saturday night as the Bobcats fell 73-60 against the UTEP Miners. Texas State outscored the Miners 37-32 in the second half and held UTEP to just 18.2 percent from beyond the arc in the contest.
Texas State started the game off strong, jumping out to an 8-5 lead over the Miners with 16:47 left in the first half. The Bobcats, however, found themselves in foul trouble shortly after building the three-point lead, giving UTEP opportunities take to take control of the game.
The UTEP lead grew to as many as nine through the middle of the first half, and proceeded to hover at that mark until the Miners rallied a 16-4 run to close out the first half, holding a 41-23 advantage over the Bobcats.
The Bobcats went into the locker rooms ahead of the Miners in the rebound battle, 22-21, and
Jasmine Baugus lead all players on the floor with six.
After the second half started with both squads scoring seven points, the Miners used a 4-0 run to go up 22 with 11:58 left in the game. Senior
Kaylan Martin proceeded to snap that Miner run, hitting a three-pointer with 11:27 left in the game. The Miners once again maintained that steady lead until the Bobcats produced a 9-0 run sparked by a free throw by
Erin Peoples and a basket from long-range by
Kaitlin Walla that cut the Miner lead to 12 with 3:50 remaining.
Texas State would come within 12 two more times in the game, but that would be as close as the Bobcats would come in the attempted comeback.
The Bobcats finished the game shooting 10-for-14 from beyond the arc, led by the 3-for-3 effort by
Walla.
Ayriel Anderson led the Bobcats in scoring with 12 points and Walla finished with a career-high 10. Baugus lead the team with a season-high seven rebounds.
Texas State falls to 1-5 on the season with five more non-conference games remaining on the schedule.
The Bobcats will remain on the road next week as they travel to Houston to take on the Rice Owls on Dec. 5. In the second-straight game against a C-USA opponent, the Bobcats will tip-off against the Owls at 7:05 p.m.
