San Marcos, Texas – In a game that went back and forth for much of the night, the Texas State basketball team was unable to overcome Stephen F. Austin, falling 64-57, Tuesday evening at Strahan Coliseum.
After trailing 30-28 at halftime, Texas State made a run early in the second half to take a 38-37 lead with 12:31 to go on a layup by Joel Wright, for two of Wright's game-high 20 points. The layup capped, at the time, a 7-2 run by Texas State.
Unfortunately SFA would respond from that point, hitting a three-pointer on its ensuing possession as part of a 8-0 run of its own. The Bobcats inched back into the game, before the Lumberjacks went on a final 11-3 run over a 2:30 span, to take a 56-45 lead with 5:58 to go, and wouldn't relinquish the lead again.
Overall the Bobcats outperformed the Lumberjacks in many areas, including rebounding and free throws. However, it was SFA's advantage from beyond the three-point line, where Texas State was just 2-of-11, that made the different. The Lumberjacks were 6-of-16 from three, with many of those coming at timely points in the game.
Reid Koenen gave the Bobcats a lift in the first half, pacing the team with eight points and five rebounds in the first 20 minutes. He finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore forward Emani Gant again led the team in the assist category with four. He finished with six points and three rebounds before fouling out, allowing SFA to come away with many key offensive rebounds down the stretch.
Texas State will now head to the road for its next two games, beginning on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 3:00 p.m., against Oral Roberts.
