MONROE, La. – The Texas State soccer team fell in another double-overtime heartbreaker on Sunday against the ULM Warhawks by a score of 2-1.
With the loss, Texas State falls to 5-8-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play.
The Bobcats got on the board first in the 12
th minute of the contest as
Lynsey Curry connected on a
Lauren Prater pass up the middle for a shot to the back right corner of the net. The goal was Curry's team-leading sixth of the season.
ULM answered back less than five minutes later with a goal to tie up the contest at 1-1 by Mariah Mitchell. Mitchell's goal was her fourth of the season.
At the half, score remained tied at 1-1. Throughout much of the first half, the Texas State offense maintained offensive control. The Bobcats led the shot count 13-7 and had two corner kicks compared to zero by the Warhawks.
The intermission brought out a firing Warhawks team, but the Bobcats held them off as both teams remained scoreless in the second period. The Bobcats had a prime scoring opportunity in the middle of the half, but the shot by
Gabbi Cottee missed just left of the goalpost.
ULM outshot Texas State 9-4 in the half but the Bobcats recorded six corners compared to four by the Warhawks.
In the first overtime period, Texas State took over the contest much like it did in the first half offensively. The Bobcats had opportunities on a couple of plays including one shot by Curry that bounced right off of the chest of the Warhawk goalkeeper.
The Bobcats outshot the Warhawks 5-2 in the first overtime.
The second overtime period was a true defensive battle until the final seconds of the contest when ULM was granted with a free kick that resulted in the game winner for the Warhawks. The loss was the third double-overtime loss for the Bobcats this season.
Texas State ended the game outshooting the Warhawks 23-19 and the Bobcats recorded 10 corners compared to six by ULM.
Texas State returns to San Marcos next weekend for a pair of matches against UALR and Arkansas State. Friday's match against UALR is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be the Pink Out game. All fans are encouraged to not only wear maroon and gold like always, but to wear pink in support of breast cancer research. The Texas State soccer program will be selling its 2013 merchandise and all proceeds will go toward breast cancer research.
