San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State soccer team hosts two familiar foes this weekend, in Stephen F. Austin and McNeese State. The two teams were conference mates with Texas State in the Southland Conference for the past several years.
The contest with SFA marks a rematch of the 2011 Southland Conference Championship game, which Texas State won, 1-0. The Lady Jacks enter the game 5-2-0 and are averaging 2.29 goals a game, ranking them 38th in the country.
McNeese comes into this weekend's play 3-3-1. Haley Lyons has scored four of the team's 11 goals so far. The Cowgirls have played three goalkeeper's to date, with Katie Seeber seeing the majority of the action.
The Bobcats enter the weekend 2-5-1. Texas State has faced a number of tough opponents in Rice, Central Michigan and TCU the last three games. Friday's game begins a stretch of five straight home games, after starting the year with six of the team's first eight on the road.
Pregame Quotes
Head Coach Kat Conner
On how the players are approaching practice this week
“They're a little bit disappointed with the TCU loss. We actually did put together two great halves of soccer, we just made crucial mistakes that they were able to capitalize on with set pieces. We've got to clean up those mistakes. The players realize that, they said that Tuesday, and they want to clean it up and become better. In essence I think there is hope that it is coming around and turning around, but now there's just a few more touches of improvement that really have to be thought about and focused on, to get that W.”
On Friday's game against Stephen F. Austin
“The players know that SFA is going to want that win. We upset SFA in the conference tournament, there's no doubt about it. The players know that, and they know SFA is going to come in and try to avenge it. When it's a great rivalry like that, you don't have to talk to about it, the players already know. They're talking about it, and have written it on their goal sheet, they know what a great win it could be for us as we head into WAC play.”
On Sunday's game against McNeese
“They're tough, they're always organized defensively and they always have a good goalkeeper. They like to keep more numbers behind the ball, so it's tougher to break them down. It's going to be tough for us, but we have to be patient with a sense of urgency, understanding it's important for us to get the first goal before they do. It's crucial for us to score quickly because it becomes harder and harder to get one past them. Then you set yourself up for the counter coming out of that because you're committing so many numbers up top.”
