San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State men's and women's track and field teams will be hosts of the 2012 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships for the first time in eight years this weekend, May 11-13, at the Texas State Track and Field Stadium.
“Everyone's excited because we get the opportunity of running on our own track,” said head coach Dana Boone. “It makes it even more special because this is our last time competing in the Southland Conference.”
This week, the men's and women's teams earned South Central Region rankings for fifth straight week as the women remained in the top-10 as the No. 10 team while the men stayed at the No. 11 spot in the region.
For the women, junior hurdler Chante'sean White comes into the championships with the 24th-best time in the nation for the 400-meter hurdles. White recorded a personal-best 58.04 at the Bobcat Classic and has led the conference in the event the entire season. Also at the Bobcat Classic, freshman sprinter Alexus Hebert posted a personal-best 24.07 in the 200 meters to move into first in the conference.
Also in contention for a conference title is the women's 4x400-meter relay team of Morgan Canty, White, Kellie Trinkaus and Katie Miller. The team is currently second in the conference and among the top-50 in the nation with a time of 3:39.86, less than a second behind conference leader SFA. Looking for her first conference title will be heptathlete Danessa Lyssy, who set a school record in the event earlier this season at the Texas Relays. Lyssy ranks second in the event with 5045 points and is just 54 points behind the leader.
On the field, senior Elena Horn has been dominant in the pole vault at the SLC Championships throughout her career with three gold and two silver medals in her five championship appearances. After taking second at the 2012 indoor championships, Horn enters the outdoor championships with the best mark in the conference with 4.05 meters (13-03.50), which she set to open the season at the TCU Invitational.
Junior Jessica Thomas is also atop the SLC standings with a mark of 6.22 meters (20-05) in the long jump, which she set at the Texas State Invitational in early April. As of this week, Thomas' mark is 29th in the nation. In the ring, junior Kelsey Titzman will look to claim the outdoor shot put title after being named the conference indoor champion earlier this year. Titzman comes in this week leading the conference with a mark of 15.07 meters (49-05.50).
On the men's side, junior vaulter Logan Cunningham posted an outdoor personal-best of 5.45 meters (17-10.50) at the Bobcat Classic to move into first place in the conference standings and in the top-10 in the nation. The all-American will look to capture his first conference title after finishing second at this year's indoor championships.
On the track, freshman Charles Grethen ranks first in the 800 meters coming into the SLC Championships. Grethen recorded 1:49.03 at the Michael Johnson Dr. Pepper Classic for the 41st-fastest time in the nation this season, putting him less than a second away from another school record in the event.
In the 200 meters, Texas State comes in with the top-two times in the conference. Sophomore James Johnson posted a wind-aided school record time of 20.57 at the Texas State Invitational, placing him 15th in the nation, while junior Timothy Young recorded a personal-best 21.08 at the Bobcat Classic. The two along with William Murray and Brandon Thomas have the fastest time in the conference in the 4x100-meter relay with 40.15 coming into the weekend. Their time also puts them among the top-35 in the nation.
“The whole team's work ethic and focus has definitely increased,” Boone said. “As a result, they're seeing the benefits from that.”
Competition will begin Friday at 8:30 a.m. with the women's 10,000 meters. The opening ceremony for the final running events is slated for 3 p.m. on Sunday. Live results will be available while a complete recap of the day's events will be posted at www.txstatebobcats.com at the conclusion of each day.
Following the conference championships Sunday, the track and field coaches will hold a casual meet and greet at Palmer's Restaurant at 7 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided. To RSVP, contact assistant coach Bryan Jackson at 512-245-3295 or bj23@txstate.edu.
