Hammond Earns Sun Belt Athlete of the Week After Nation-Leading Decathlon

SAN MARCOS, Texas— Texas State multi-event athlete Easton Hammond has been named Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Week following a record-setting performance in the decathlon that featured five personal bests.

Hammond totaled 7,823 points in the decathlon, the top mark in the nation this season, while breaking both the Bobcat Invitational meet record and the Texas State Track & Field Complex facility record.

The sophomore delivered one of the most complete performances of his career, recording personal bests in five of the 10 events, including the 1500 meters (4:26.10), pole vault (4.90m), 110-meter hurdles (15.75), long jump (7.09m) and 100 meters (11.17).

Hammond opened the decathlon with momentum, clocking a personal-best 11.17 seconds in the 100 meters before adding another PR in the long jump at 7.09 meters.

He maintained that consistency throughout the opening day to remain in contention heading into the final five events.

On day two, Hammond continued to separate himself with a personal-best 15.75 in the 110-meter hurdles and a breakthrough performance in the pole vault, clearing 4.90 meters.

He capped the competition with a strong final push in the 1500 meters, recording a personal-best 4:26.10.

The honor marks the first Sun Belt Athlete of the Week award of Hammond's career and adds to Texas State's momentum during the outdoor season.

Texas State returns to competition next week as the Bobcats continue their outdoor schedule leading up to the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
