San Marcos, Texas –
Texas State could not complete the series sweep of Lamar on Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark as the Cardinals took an early lead and held on late for an 8-4 victory. Despite the loss, the Bobcats claimed the series for the team's 19th consecutive Southland Conference home series victory.

Lamar took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning before stringing together seven straight hits that scored five runs in the seventh inning to take an 8-0 advantage.

Jeff McVaney put the Bobcats on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning when he led off the frame with his eighth home run of the season to make the score 8-1.

Texas State then put three runs on the scoreboard in the ninth inning. Morgan Mickan led off the inning with a single, and he came home two batters later when Casey Kalenkosky singled to make the score 8-2.

After the Bobcats grounded into a double play that allowed McVaney to score, the team put together three straight hits by Andrew Stumph, Brooks Orton and Ben McElroy – the last of which brought home Stumph for the final 8-4 score.

Sophomore Kyle Finnegan (5-5) received the loss after pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing six runs. He struck out four and walked two on the afternoon.

McVaney reached base three times and finished 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI. His home run tied him with Kalenkosky for the team lead.

Colby Targun went 2 for 4 for the game, while Mickan reached base twice as part of a 1 for 3 day at the plate. Targun raised his batting average this season to .389 with his two-hit performance.
