San Marcos, Texas – A total of 19 athletes will represent the Texas State track and field program this week, May 24-26, at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin. The Bobcats will begin competition Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
Each event will feature 48 competitors with the exception of the relays, which is comprised of 24 teams. The top 12 finishers will move on to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9.
“We're very fortunate to have that number of athletes competing, said head coach Dana Boone. “You never know how things are going to go.”
Junior vaulter Logan Cunningham comes into the week with a personal-best of 5.53 meters (18-01.75), the third-best mark in the NCAA this year. Cunningham will go up against the nation's top-two vaulters in Arkansas' Andrew Irwin and UCLA's Michael Woepse, and will be making his second straight regional appearance.
Junior hurdler Chante'sean White and sophomore sprinter James Johnson are ranked eighth in their events. White posted a personal-best time of 57.29 in the 400-meter hurdles prelims at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships while Johnson's wind-aided school record time of 20.57 in the 200 meters qualified him for his first regional competition.
Junior Timothy Young will be the lone Bobcat to compete in three events at the preliminary round. Young comes in ranked 13th in the 100 meters, 24th in the 110-meter hurdles and will also compete in the 4x100-meter relay. Young will be joined by Johnson, William Murray and Brandon Thomas in the relay as the team comes in with a school record time of 40.15, the 18th-best time at the preliminary round. Murray and senior Ben Marvin will take part in the long jump as Murray comes in with a season-best mark of 7.47 meters (24-06.25) while Marvin has a distance of 7.43 meters (24-04.50).
Also competing for the Bobcat men will be freshmen Charles Grethen and Darian Brown. Grethen will run in the 800 meters, coming in with a qualifying time of 1:49.03 to rank 28th. In the discus, Brown ranks 23rd with a throw of 55.72 meters (182-10).
On the women's side, senior Katie Miller will join White in the 400-meter hurdles. At the SLC Championships, Miller recorded a personal-best time of 58.67 to make her second straight regional appearance in the event. Miller and White will join senior Morgan Canty and junior Kellie Trinkaus in the 4x400-meter relay. The team comes in with the 22nd-best time in the region with 3:39.86. The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Alexus Hebert, Franchelle Hill, Daniela Anane-Bediakoh and Courtney Miller qualified for the preliminary round at the SLC Championships with a time of 45.37.
Senior Elena Horn will make her second straight regional appearance in the pole vault. Horn enters the competition with a personal-best and school record height of 4.15 meters (13-07.25), the 16th-best mark in the region. Also on the field for the Bobcats will be juniors Danessa Lyssy and Kelsey Titzman. Titzman will compete in the shot put, entering with a personal-best mark of 15.07 meters (49-05.50).
“We have to do the things we did to get here,” Boone said. “We don't need to change your approach so the message has been the same as it has been all season.”
