San Marcos, Texas – Texas State's offense generated season highs of 14 runs and 17 hits Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark as the Bobcats completed the weekend sweep of Central Arkansas with a 14-5 victory. The win secured the team's first conference sweep of the season and improved the team's home record to 16-3.
Freshman Garrett Mattlage led four Bobcats who had two-or-more hits on the day as he finished with a career-high four hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Colby Targun (3 for 4) and Jeff McVaney (3 for 5) each notched three-hit games and combined for three runs scored, three RBIs and four stolen bases on the afternoon. McVaney finished the game with three stolen bases himself, marking the second time in his career he swiped three bags in a game. Andrew Stumph (2 for 5) also recorded a pair of hits while scoring two runs and adding an RBI.
The offense was more than enough for sophomore starting pitcher Kyle Finnegan, who improved his record to 5-3 on the season with the win. Finnegan pitched 7 2/3 innings while limiting the Bears to three earned runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two.
Texas State improved to 23-16 overall and 11-10 in the Southland Conference with the win. The team is currently tied with McNeese State for fourth place in the SLC standings.
Central Arkansas (16-20, 10-11 SLC) starting pitcher Ryan Angus dropped to 3-5 this season after allowing five runs in just 2 1/3 innings of work. The Bears used five pitchers on the afternoon with each of them giving up at least two runs.
Joey Fuda's RBI single in the second inning started the scoring for the Bobcats, staking the team to a 1-0 lead after two innings.
Central Arkansas came back with two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead, but Texas State answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, 5-2. Targun had an RBI single and Isaac Nuti drew a bases-loaded walk to put the team in front 3-2. A Central Arkansas error allowed the next two runs to come home for the Bobcats, giving them a three-run lead after three innings.
Texas State extended its lead in the fourth inning to 7-3 after Targun delivered his second RBI single in as many innings and a double-steal brought home McVaney for a five-run Texas State advantage.
After a Central Arkansas run in the fifth inning, the Bobcats added two more in the bottom of the frame. Tyler Sibley and McVaney both had RBI hits that made the score 9-3 in favor of Texas State.
Casey Kalenkosky helped increase the lead in the seventh inning when he doubled down the left-field line to bring home a pair of runs for an 11-3 score. Later in the inning, UCA committed its fourth error of the game that allowed Kalenkosky to come up for the Bobcats' 12th run of the game.
The teams traded two-spots in the eighth inning as two unearned UCA runs came home in the top of the inning before Mattlage recorded his fourth hit of the game, a two-RBI single, in the bottom of the inning for the final 14-5 tally.
The Bobcats do not play a midweek game this week and will return to action on Friday, April 27 when the team heads to Thibodaux, La., for a three-game series against Southland Conference foe Nicholls. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
