Huntsville, Texas –
Sam Houston State scored 10 runs on 15 hits Saturday afternoon as the Bearkats handed No. 23 Texas State its largest defeat of the season, 10-4, at Sanders Stadium in Huntsville. The home team put six runs on the board early and never let the Bobcats back in the game as it clinched the weekend series.

The Bobcats dropped consecutive games for just the second time this season as they fell to 14-8 overall and 4-4 in the Southland Conference. Sam Houston State improved to 13-9 overall and 6-2 in the SLC with the win.

Texas State starting pitcher Colton Turner (1-1) lost for the first time this season after allowing three earned runs over 2 2/3 innings on the mound. The junior struck out two in his shortest outing of the season.

Justin Jackson (4-2) earned his fourth win of the season for Sam Houston State.

After falling behind 6-0 through five innings, Texas State put together four hits in the sixth inning to help plate three runs and cut the deficit in half. Cody Gambill began the inning with an infield single and came home after an RBI single from Ben McElroy put the Bobcats on the scoreboard. After Casey Kalenkosky walked to load the bases, Jeff McVaney hit a full-count pitch back through the middle for a two-RBI single that made the score 6-3. McVaney upped his season RBI total to a team-leading 19 with the single.

That is as close as the Bobcats would come though as the home team scored three more runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-3 advantage. A sacrifice fly from Brooks Orton scored McElroy for the team's fourth run of the game, but Sam Houston State answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth for the final 10-4 tally.

Gambill finished 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Texas State, while McElroy was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Texas State and Sam Houston State will play the series finale at 1 p.m. in Huntsville. Sophomore RHP Kyle Finnegan will make the start for the Bobcats as the team looks to avoid a Southland Conference series sweep for the first time since 2008.
