Match Statistics

San Marcos, Texas -
The Texas State women's tennis team defeated UTEP 6-1 in a non-conference dual match at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Sunday morning.

The Bobcats opened the match winning all three double matches to earn the doubles team point and then proceeded to win five of the six singles matches en route to the victory.

“We played really wee in doubles with our No. 1 team (Jessica Kahts and Melissa Hadad) earning a victory against a very good team,” said Texas State head coach Tory Plunkett. “The thing that also excited me was that our two freshmen (Rachel Baldree and Francesca Bernes) did really well both on the court and emotionally when they helped us overcome some adversity in the match. That was exciting to see.”

Kahts and Hadad won their double match over Martina Trierweiler and Rebeca Calvillo by a score of 8-4. In the No. 2 match, Gabriela Rojas and Bérénice Van den Bergh defeated Marie Leblond and Gabi Vazquez by a score of 8-2. Mariana Perez and Rachel Baldree won the No. 3 match over Dariya Abdrakhmanova and Anastasiya Sylenko by a score of 8-4.

In singles play, Kahts won the No. 1 match over Trierweiler in straight sets after winning the first set with a tiebreaker. She won the first set 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 7-5, and came back to win the second set by a score of 6-4.

Hadad dominated the No. 2 match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Calvillo, while Baldree won the No. 3 match over Vazquez by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Rojas suffered the only loss of the day in the No. 4 match as she fell in three sets against Abdrakhmanova by a score of 6-4, 0-6, 10-7.

Perez won the No. 5 match in three sets with a 6-3, 0-6, 10-7 victory over LeBlond, and Bernes won the No. 6 singles match by a score of 6-1, 6-0.

The Bobcats will travel to Prairie View A&M on Tuesday and play a match at 3:00 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, but heavy rain throughout Texas forced it to be rescheduled.

“This will be our final checklist to see if this is where I want to be with our lineup,” said Plunkett. “There is a lot of competitiveness with our players pushing each other, but at the same time, they are a very cohesive group and work well together. Their main focus is making the team better and that is exciting for me as a coach.”

Following the Prairie View A&M match, Texas State will open its Southland Conference schedule at Lamar and McNeese State on March 3 and 4.
