San Jose, Calif. – Playing on the San Jose State football field, which is a faster track than normal, the Texas State soccer team used the fast track to generate scoring opportunities, resulting in a 3-1 win over the Spartans, Friday night. With the win, the Bobcats moved into first place in the WAC with a 2-1 league record.
Tied 1-1, Taylor Person found a loose ball off a Sydney Curry corner kick and put it in the back of the net for her third goal of the year. The goal came just four minutes following San Jose State's goal.
Texas State converted on its very first scoring chance of the night. Tori Hale sent a leading pass to Lynsey Curry, 20 yards in front of the goal. Curry took a few dribbles towards the net and put it in the right corner for her third goal of the year. It was Hale's fifth assist of the year, putting her second in the conference.
Curry scored with two seconds left in the game, on a loose ball in front of the goal, for her second of the match. She has four goals on the year, and gave the Bobcats the 3-1 win.
The connection between Hale and Curry was Texas State's second fastest goal of the year to start a game. The fastest came against Texas Southern when the Bobcats scored just over two minutes into the match. That goal also was a Hale to Curry connection.
Landry Lowe found a hole in the defense later in the first half and sent it through to find Serena Hines all alone 30 yards out. Hines went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who used her body to block Hines' shot on goal.
Continuing to find seams in the middle of the defense, Emma Staley put a ball towards the center of the 18-yard box. Taylor Person ran onto the ball, but a Spartan defender ran stride for stride with her and kicked the ball out of harm's way.
Hale outran a defender 12 minutes into the second half and was all alone on the attack, but her momentum left her a small angle on the goal and the ensuing shot went right. With seven minutes to go, she had a shot on goal, which the keeper had to go to the ground to stop.
The Spartan goal came with just over 24 minutes to go in the second half. Spartan midfielder Amanda Hines gathered a loose ball in front of the goal and put it past Natalie Gardini for the equalizer.
Texas State will look to go 2-0 on its roadtrip, when it next plays Sunday at 1:00 p.m., Mountain time against Utah State, in Logan, Utah.
