Denver, Colo. –
The Texas State soccer team had a great defensive battle with the No. 23 team in the country, the Denver Pioneers, but came up just short, falling 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at CIBER Field in Denver.

The Bobcats fought in the midfield for much of the first half, with the defense able to clear nearly all chances by the Pioneers away. Goalkeeper Natalie Gardini came out several times to take the ball out of the air or get on the ground to scoop up the ball before the Pioneers could gain control.

Offensively the Bobcats stood up to the No. 23 team in the country. Midway through the first half, Landry Lowe won a ball and slipped a ball through to Tori Hale, giving Hale a breakaway at goal. Unfortunately the shot went just wide, allowing the Pioneers to take their 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Denver's goal came with 13:41 to go in the first half. A Pioneer forward crossed it from right to left. Kalie Vaughn for Denver was waiting on the left post and in the air passed it over to Kaitlin Bast who headed it out of the air into the net.

The second half was a battle in the midfield with neither team able to generate many scoring opportunities. Gardini finished the game with two saves as Denver attempted just 10 shots.

Texas State will play the regular season finale on the road, next Sunday at 1:00 p.m., against UTSA.
