Arlington, Texas – No. 25 Texas State led early but could not hold on as UT Arlington defeated the Bobcats, 9-6, in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Despite the loss, the Bobcats (35-20, 24-9 SLC) wrap up the regular season with their third consecutive Southland Conference regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament.
UT Arlington (27-29, 15-18 SLC) finished its season in ninth place in the Southland Conference standings, one spot out of the tournament field.
John Beck (3-3) earned his third win of the season for UTA, while Texas State starter Colton Turner (8-2) lost for just the second time in 14 starts. Collin Reynolds came on to get his third save of the season after pitching the final two innings for the Mavericks.
The game started promising for the Bobcats as Sibley led off the game with a single before stealing his 18th base of the season to get into scoring position for Jeff McVaney, who singled up the middle to bring home Sibley for a 1-0 Texas State lead.
That lead would hold up through the first four innings as Turner faced just 14 batters through the first four frames, keeping the home team off the scoreboard.
Texas State added a pair in the top of the fifth inning when Andrew Stumph singled to center field to bring home Sibley and McVaney for a 3-0 Bobcat advantage, but UT Arlington broke through in the bottom half of the inning with five runs to take a 5-3 lead and chase Turner from the game.
UT Arlington added a run in the bottom of the sixth and three in the eighth inning for a 9-3 tally before Kyle Kubitza knocked McVaney for his 55th RBI of the season and a 9-4 score. Two batters later, Stumph doubled to right field to plate both Kubitza and Casey Kalenkosky to make the score 9-6 before Reynolds was able to close out the game.
The Bobcats will return to action on Wednesday, May 25 in the first day of the 2011 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament. Texas State, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, will play the No. 8 seed Nicholls Colonels at approximately 7 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark.
