Box Score

Arlington, Texas –
Bret Atwood tied the Texas State record for career hits when he led off the 11th inning with a double and eventually came around to score what proved to be the game-winning run as the Bobcats defeated UT Arlington, 4-2, in 11 innings.

The game was completed on Saturday after being postponed due to fog following nine innings on Friday with the score tied 2-2. The Bobcats and Mavericks will play the game originally scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at approximately 2:15 p.m. in Arlington.

In the 11th inning, the Mavericks intentionally walked Jeff McVaney to load the bases for Kyle Kubitza, who worked a walk to bring home Atwood from third base for the game-winning run. Casey Kalenkosky then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Christian Gallegos for the final tally.

McVaney (1-1) picked up his first win of the year on the mound after throwing two scoreless innings of relief, while UTA's Kasey Merck (2-1) was charged with the loss.

Carson Smith made his 13th start of the season and threw seven innings on the mound. He struck out eight and allowed six hits as he recorded his 12th consecutive quality start, the seventh longest active streak in NCAA Division I.

Atwood set a new record for career at-bats at Texas State during Friday's portion of the game. With five at-bats in the game, Atwood has now amassed 742 at-bats during his career, bettering the previous record of 739 set by Evan Tierce from 2001-04.

After two scoreless innings to begin the game, the Bobcats put two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 advantage. McVaney began the inning with a single and eventually came around to score after a throwing error by the UTA second baseman who was attempting to turn an inning-ending double play. Instead, the Bobcats were able to take advantage of the error and score a second run in the inning when Cory Falvey hit an RBI single to left field for his second hit of the day, bringing home Andrew Stumph from second base.

The Mavericks answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 2-1 before adding another run in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.

The pitchers would take over from there, putting zeros on the scoreboard until the 10th inning when the umpires stopped the game because a thick layer of fog made its way onto the field. The game was resumed at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
