San Marcos, Texas –
Senior Clint Vest came up big for the No. 25 Texas State baseball team on Sunday, setting a new career high for RBIs as he helped the Bobcats run-rule Nicholls, 14-3, in seven innings to earn their second straight SLC series sweep. Joey Fuda capped off the victory with a three-run, walk-off homer to put the game in the books.

“It's a big-time win today, especially after winning conference yesterday,” Vest said. “We have a great team, and I couldn't ask for anything better.”

Vest knocked in a career-high four runs after he finished Sunday's game with a pair of two-RBI hits and three base-knocks overall. He also scored a pair of runs on the afternoon.

Vest's day was just one of several standout performances for the Bobcats in the series finale. Casey Kalenkosky hit his Southland Conference-best 18th home run to tie the single-season record at Texas State set by Luke Cannon in 2006 before being tied by Paul Goldschmidt in 2009. Kalenkosky finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored to go along with his home run.

“It was good for us to come out and play good after winning the championship yesterday,” Kalenkosky said. “It feels good to finally tie the record. It lifts a little pressure off [me]. I just went out there and kept swinging.”

Kyle Kubitza posted three hits as part of a 3-for-4 day that included his seventh triple of the season, tying the single-season record for triples. The third baseman also scored three runs and knocked in two more.

Fuda (2-for-3) had a career-high four RBIs and a run scored to go along with his first home run of the season. Andrew Stumph (2-for-4) also had a pair of hits and two runs scored on Sunday to make him 8-for-12 for the series at the plate.

The regular season SLC champion Bobcats are now 34-17 overall and 23-7 in conference. Nicholls dropped to 23-27 overall and 12-18 in conference play.

Colton Turner started for the Bobcats and improved to 8-1 on the season and allowing just one earned run over six innings. He struck out five and scattered seven hits before giving way to Hunter Lemke who pitched an inning of scoreless relief before the run rule was implemented.

Nicholls pitcher Mike Wisecarver fell to 4-5 after giving up seven runs in 2 1/3 innings on the mound.

The Bobcats finished the game with 15 hits while limiting the visitors to just seven.

Nicholls got the first run of the game on a sac bunt followed by an error in the top of the second. Texas State responded by getting its first hit of the game in the second inning when Kubitza nearly hit a home run over the right-field fence that was knocked back into play by the Colonel outfielder but still resulted in a triple. Kubitza came in to score four batters later when Christian Gallegos singled up the middle.

Nicholls took the lead once again in the top of the third to make it 2-1; however, Texas State took the lead back in the bottom half of the frame. After loading the bases, the Bobcats scored on back-to-back hits by Kalenkosky and Kubitza, giving them a 4-2 lead. Vest brought in two runs with a double, and Fuda added to the big inning with an RBI single. The Bobcats totaled six runs in the inning to take a 7-2 lead.

The Bobcats added to their lead once again after Nicholls scored a run in the fifth. Vest brought in Kalenkosky and Kubitza when he singled to left field. The two RBIs gave Vest four on the day.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats powered their way to an eight-run lead. Stumph doubled to increase his series batting average to over .650, and Kalenkosky followed by hitting a home run to left.

One inning later, the Bobcats would put both Jeff McVaney and Vest on base to begin the inning and set up Fuda for his game-winning home run. The walk-off shot was the third this season for the Bobcats, who also had walk-off homers in the final two games of the series against Houston.

Up next on the Texas State calendar is a rematch against Rice on Tuesday. The Bobcats will travel to Houston for a 6:30 p.m. game against the Owls. The two teams played earlier this season at Bobcat Ballpark with Rice edging Texas State, 11-10.
