San Marcos, Texas –
Texas State won in extra innings for the first time this season as the Bobcats defeated visiting Houston Baptist, 3-2, in 13 innings on Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark. Playing in their third extra-innings game this season, the Bobcats got the winning run after Bret Atwood stole third base and caused an errant throw by the HBU catcher that allowed him to trot home for the one-run win.

Texas State (21-11) improved to 14-0 against Houston Baptist (6-23) all-time with the win.

Senior Joseph Dvorsky (1-0) earned the victory after pitching four innings of relief. The right-hander allowed just two hits while striking out five batters.

Tyler McCarty (1-5) was charged with the loss after allowing an unearned run and one hit in one-third of an inning.

Bobcat pitchers combined for a season-high 18 strikeouts in the win. In addition to Dvorsky's five strikeouts, Travis Ballew and Garrett Shepperd each had four, while Hunter Lemke and Fielding Pittman both had two. Mitchell Pitts added one strikeout in two innings on the mound.

The Bobcats had eight hits on Tuesday night, led by Joey Fuda's 2-for-4 performance. Fuda reached base four times in the game after also taking a pair of walks and stealing his eighth base of the season.

Houston Baptist scored the first run of the game in the third inning after stringing together a pair of hits, but the Bobcats responded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kyle Kubitza hit his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot, to tie the game at 1-1.

One inning later, Texas State took the lead when Christian Gallegos singled up the middle to bring home Cory Falvey from second base for a 2-1 Bobcat lead. Falvey reached earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice before stealing his first base of the season to get to second.

The Bobcat pitching staff silenced the Houston Baptist offense through the middle innings, allowing just one hit between the fourth and seventh frames while recording five strikeouts during that span. Mitchell Pitts came in relief of starter Travis Ballew and pitched two scoreless innings, and Garrett Shepperd followed with two scoreless innings and four strikeouts on the mound.

In the top of the eighth, Huskies designated hitter Robbie Buller hit a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 2-2 and force extra innings.

Neither team could generate much offense in the extra frames as Huskies' reliever Scott Moore pitched five scoreless innings, and he was matched by Dvorsky, who struck out five over four scoreless innings on the mound.

In the bottom of the 13th inning, Houston Baptist went to Tyler McCarty out of the bullpen, and the Bobcats were able to put two of the first three batters he faced on base as Atwood singled and Fuda walked to put runners on first and second. Kubitza came up next, and on the first pitch of the at-bat, Atwood took off for third which led to the winning run after the throw from the HBU catcher sailed in left field.

The Bobcats return to SLC play this weekend when the team hosts a three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana at Bobcat Ballpark beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
