Season Low Night Hurts Men’s Hoops at Sam Houston State

– Texas State men's basketball tied a season-low 18 made field goals as it fell to Sam Houston State tonight at Johnson Coliseum. The loss dropped the Bobcats overall record to 15-15, 10-6 SLC, while the Bearkats improved to 17-12, 10-6 SLC. Texas State will be the No. 4 seed in the 2011 State Farm Southland Conference Tournament next week.

Tonight was not the night for Texas State as it stumbled to capture the victory in Huntsville taking itself out of reach for a share of the conference regular season title. The Bobcats scored a season-low 52 points and made just three three-pointers in the loss.

Ryan White led Texas State with 15 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Tony Bishop added 14 points.

Sam Houston State road the momentum of its home crowd as it came out in the second half on fire. The Bearkats went on a 16-9 run to start the second half, backed by three treys by Lance Pevehouse. Bishop was the Bobcats go-to player to start the half as the forward netted seven of Texas State's nine points in that sequence.

Both teams traded points over the next few possessions. Texas State went on a 7-2 run after buckets by both Ryan White and J.B. Conley mixed with a few free throws by the pair. Texas State saw itself down 59-40 with less than five minutes to go in the game and in need of a run if it was going to get back in the game.

It was the guards who were able to connect down the stretch in the final minutes. Seven of Texas State's final 13 points came from the free throw line. White netted a three-pointer with time under 30 seconds, but it was a little too late as the Bobcats fell to Sam Houston State, 68-52 at Johnson Coliseum.

Neither team was excellent from the floor in the first half, but Sam Houston definitely had the advantage at halftime as it took a 32-22 lead into the locker room. The Bobcats began the game with a pair of baskets, but the Bearkats came back to spurt out nine straight points. Texas State got to within four after a John Bowman three-pointer cut Sam Houston State's lead to 15-11. Unfortunately, the Bearkats went on to outscore the Bobcats 17-11 to end the half. The Bobcats were 9-for-31 from the floor in the first half and the Bearkats were 13-for-29. Bishop led all Bobcats at the half with seven points, including 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Sam Houston State's Lance Pevehouse was the overall leading scorer of the first with 11 points.

Sam Houston State's Lance Pevehouse led all scorers with 25 points; seven from three-point range. Gilberto Clavell had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Texas State will play in its third straight Southland Conference Tournament on Wednesday, March 9. The Bobcats will be the No. 4 seed and will face Southeastern Louisiana at 8:30 p.m. in the final game of the quarterfinals.
