Fort Worth, Texas – The Texas State baseball team held a 1-0 lead for the majority of Tuesday night's game against No. 11 TCU, but a three-run seventh inning propelled the home team a 3-1 victory at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth.
The Bobcats fell to 15-5 overall and had a three-game winning streak stopped while the Horned Frogs improved to 13-7.
Starter Lee Colon took a no-decision after throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his fifth start of the season. The senior did not walk a batter and scattered seven hits as he lowered his season ERA to 2.78 after leaving with a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Travis Ballew (1-1) was charged with his first loss of the season after allowing a pair of runs (one earned), and Stefan Crichton earned the victory in relief for the Horned Frogs.
Tyler Sibley extended his hitting streak to 18 games in the top of the first inning with a leadoff single and advanced to third base with one out for a chance to put the Bobcats on the board early, but the Horned Frogs were able to escape the inning on an unconventional double play with a strikeout and Sibley being thrown out at the plate.
The Bobcats ran onto the scoreboard in the top of the second inning after Kyle Kubitza led off the inning with a walk. The junior swiped second and two pitches later took off for third, causing an errant throw by the TCU catcher that allowed Kubitza to scamper home for a 1-0 Texas State lead.
The Horned Frogs threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth as Josh Elander singled to center with a runner on second, but Bret Atwood got to the ball in a hurry and fired home to get the TCU runner at the plate and maintain the Bobcats 1-0 advantage.
Texas State's pitching and defense continued to shine in the sixth inning. After the TCU put a runner on third with one out, Harrington went to his bullpen for Ballew who induced a pair of groundouts to help the Bobcats escape the inning.
However, the TCU was able to break through in the bottom of the seventh and take a 3-1 lead, using three hits, a walk and a Texas State error to bring in three runs (two unearned).
The Bobcats were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but a hard-hit ball by Casey Kalenkosky turned into a double play to end the game.
The Bobcats will head to Lamar this weekend for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
