Austin, Texas –
The Texas State baseball team fell to No. 5 Texas on Tuesday night, 3-1, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in front of 7,007 in attendance. The Bobcats got behind early and were never able to recover as they dropped to 12-4 overall.

The Longhorns (12-5) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after leadoff man Brandon Loy walked and worked his way around the bases without the help of a hit. After being sacrificed to second, Loy stole third and came home on a wild pitch from Texas State starter Lee Colon.

Colon found his groove and struck out four batters over the next two innings before a Texas State error extended the bottom of the fourth inning and allowed an unearned run to cross the plate, giving the home team a 2-0 advantage.

Texas State cut into its deficit in the top of the fifth when Cory Falvey doubled to the wall in right center to bring home Cody Gambill all the way from first base and make the score 2-1 in favor of Texas. The Bobcats threatened to add more after loading the bases, but Longhorn reliever Andrew McKirahan was able to get out of the inning without further damage.

Colon gave way to sophomore Travis Ballew in the sixth inning and the righty sat down the first five batters he faced before a two-out Longhorn double in the bottom of the seventh inning started a rally. Texas loaded the bases and scored an unearned run, its second of the game, to increase its lead to 3-1.

Fielding Pittman came in and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to keep the deficit at two, but the Texas State offense was stymied by the Longhorn bullpen as the Longhorns claimed the 3-1 victory.

McKirahan (2-0) earned the victory for Texas, while Colon (1-2) was charged with the loss after giving up just one earned run over five innings. Colon struck out five and limited the Longhorns to four hits before being relieved in the sixth inning.

Tyler Sibley extended his hitting streak to 14 games in the first inning with a leadoff single as he finished 1-for-4 on the day. Falvey (1-for-3) and Isaac Nuti (1-for-2) had the other two hits for a Bobcat offense that was limited to three hits for the game.

Texas State returns to action this weekend for a three-game series at Bobcat Ballpark against Sam Houston State beginning on Friday.
