San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State baseball team has gotten off to a 5-2 start to the 2011 season after playing all seven of its games in the comforts of Bobcat Ballpark. On Tuesday, the Bobcats will have their first road test when they venture to Waco for a game against No. 16 Baylor (4-3) at 4:00 p.m.

 

Texas State will send sophomore right-hander Travis Ballew (0-0, 9.95 ERA) to the mound to make his first career start. Ballew made 12 appearances out of the bullpen a season ago and has pitched two games in relief this season.

 

Baylor will counter with junior righty Tyler Bremer (0-0, 9.00 ERA) who also makes his first career start.

 

The Bobcats and Bears will meet for the 59th time in their history. Baylor owns a 42-16 advantage in the all-time series, but the Bobcats have won three of the last five matchups, including a 9-3 win in the series finale a season ago.

Game Notes

Mid-Major Poll

Texas State moved up three spots in the College Baseball Daily Mid-Major Poll to No. 9 after going 3-1 last week. The Bobcats are one of two Southland Conference teams in the poll with Southeastern Louisiana coming in at No. 5.

 

National Attendance Leaders

After two weeks of the season, Texas State ranks among the leaders in the nation in home attendance. Texas State had 10,231 fans at its seven games thus far to rank 27th nationally. Baylor is one spot ahead of the Bobcats in attendance with 10,231 in its four home games.The Bobcats had a great turnout for their season opener against Nebraska when 2,386 saw Texas State win 7-2 at Bobcat Ballpark.

 

Series Sweep

The Bobcats have a three-game winning streak going into Tuesday's game against Baylor, having won a three-game series against Akron at Bobcat Ballpark last weekend.

 

Strikeout/Walk Ratio

The Bobcats strikeout to walk ratio is an impressive 63:20 to begin the season. The differential is the second best in the Southland Conference (McNeese - 78:23).

 

Team Defense

Texas State has been outstanding defensively to begin the year, posting a .976 fielding percentage with just six errors in seven games. Texas State has also only allowed two stolen bases by opponents this season.
