Bobcats Set To Play No. 18/22 Rice Wednesday In San Marcos

Texas State plays host to the No. 18/22 team in the nation with a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday

San Marcos, Texas –
After going 2-1 on opening weekend, the Texas State baseball team will get an early-season test on Wednesday when the Bobcats see how they measure up against No. 18/22 Rice. The game will begin at 5 p.m. at Bobcat Ballpark with gates opening up at 3:30 p.m.

 

As an added bonus, fans attending the baseball game on Wednesday will receive free admission to the men's basketball game against Southeastern Louisiana with their baseball ticket stub. The basketball game begins at 7 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum.

 

Preseason all-American Carson Smith will get the start against Rice as he looks to earn his first win of the season. Smith is coming off a 2010 season in which he went 10-4 with a 3.10 ERA. The junior right-hander from Midland, Texas tossed two relief innings in the Bobcats' season opening win against Nebraska, striking out four Cornhuskers.

 

On the mound for Rice will be sophomore Chase McDowell who is set to make his first career start. McDowell had a 3.86 ERA in four appearances out of the bullpen as a freshman.

National Attendance Leaders

After opening weekend, Texas State ranks among the leaders in the nation in home attendance. Texas State had 5,558 fans at its three games over the weekend to rank 28th nationally. The Bobcats had a great turnout for their season opener against Nebraska when 2,386 saw Texas State win 7-2 at Bobcat Ballpark.

 

Mid-Major Poll

Texas State is No. 12 in the most recent College Baseball Daily Mid-Major Poll. The Bobcats moved up one spot from last week after going 2-1 to begin the season.

 

Family Affair

Two sets of brothers will be playing on opposite teams on Wednesday. Kyle Kubitza and Joey Fuda each have brothers who play for Rice in Austin Kubitza and Michael Fuda.
