San Marcos, Texas - Felicia Leask scored two goals as the Texas State soccer team won its second Southland Conference game, defeating I-35 rival UTSA, 3-1, Sunday at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Texas State applied pressure early, with three shots in the first five minutes. During that stretch, the Bobcats' best opportunity came when UTSA goalkeeper lost control of the wet ball while sliding allowing Felicia Leask to gain possession and fire a shot that went just wide.
UTSA scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute, when Liv Nyhegn scored on a deflection of a previous shot that went off the post, to go up 1-0.
The Bobcats responded quickly, when Leask stole a ball from a Roadrunner defender allowing her to go 1-on-1 with Webb. She converted her shot, sneaking the ball into the bottom left corner to tie the game at 1-1.
Three minutes following Leask's goal, Taylor Kelley got into the act, shooting a ball from the right corner of the 18-yard box, that floated over all the defenders as well as the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 Bobcat.
Just before the half, Brenna Smith had a shot that was saved by Dacia Webb, but again Webb lost control and the ball went into the middle of the box, before UTSA was able to clear it.
10 minutes into the second half, Lauren Frazier made a highlight save for the Bobcats. Nyghen had what looked to be an open shot and she powered it to the right corner, but Frazier dove and made a sprawling save, to keep the Bobcat advantage at 2-1.
Leask put the game away in the 82nd minute taking a pass from Katie Herrick and dribbling down the middle of the field before firing a shot just inside the arc at the top of the box that went inside the right post for her sixth goal of the year for a 3-1 Texas State lead.
The Roadrunners made a last chance at a comeback when Lindsay South sent a pass to Maria Rojas who deflected the ball into the goal, but Rojas was called offside, keeping the game at 3-1.
The Bobcats return to the field on Friday at 7:00 p.m., in Natchitoches, La., against Northwestern State.
