Hammond, La. – Taylor Kelley scored a goal four minutes into overtime, to clinch a first round bye in the Southland Conference Tournament, Friday against Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond, La.
Kelley's goal came directly off a corner kick as she flew the ball into the top left corner, her second such goal this season. The first time she scored on a corner kick was against Grambling. The goal was Kelley's fifth overall this season.
The Bobcats started to control the game after halftime, outshooting the Lions 8-2. Overall, Texas State held an 11-7 advantage in the game.
Kelley's corner kick was one of only a couple prime scoring opportunities for Texas State on the day, as the squad had to fight for everything it earned. Its first opportunity came around 27 minutes to go in the first half when Felicia Leask had a breakaway, but her shot was stopped by Southeastern's Cassie Northrup. Kelsey Bernard had a free kick with 4:30 to go in the second half, just outside the 18-yard box, but her attempt was saved by Northrup. Both of Bernard's shots on the day were on goal.
With its first win over Southeastern Louisiana since 2008, Texas State improves its record to 12-5-0 this season, including wins in 10 of its last 11. The Bobcats now have won 12 games four years in a row, and entered the year one of 29 teams in the country to win at least 12 games, each of the last three seasons.
The Bobcats will wrap up the regular season on Sunday in Thibodeaux, La,, against Nicholls.
