San Marcos, Texas – With the game tied 1-1, the Texas State soccer team was able to get the go ahead goal with seven minutes to go, thanks to an own goal by McNeese State, Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
On the play Jourdan Brown dribbled down the right sideline and sent a cross into the box that was meant for Felicia Leask, but McNeese's defender Megan Rogers inadvertently had the ball go off her foot and into the goal for an own goal, to give Texas State the 2-1 lead that turned out to be the final.
The Bobcats got on the board first in the game, scoring in the 11th minute when Emma Staley kicked a ball in the air as a result of a Taylor Kelley corner. Staley was waiting right in front of the goal and put it over the goalkeeper's head for the 1-0 lead.
McNeese tied it up 10 minutes later when Kathryn Mundy hit a shot from about 25 yards out that Lauren Frazier had to leap to stop. Frazier deflected it straight up in the air and it at first appeared she had saved it, but the referee ruled the ball went over the goal line on the deflection.
Erica Michaud had a standout game for the Bobcats, splitting two defenders in the 33rd minute and had a breakaway, but her shot was stopped by McNeese goalkeeper Casandra Read to keep the score tied at 1-1. Michaud finished with a career-high seven shots, four of which were on goal. Her shots equaled McNeese State's total output for the game.
With the game still tied at 1-1, Leask took a ball away from a defender five minutes into the second half, but she dribbled too far down the field, taking away the angle and her resulting shot was met by Read on the near post.
Taylor Person had her opportunity to break the deadlock in the 80th minute when she made a run all alone into the box and Andrea Mauk sent her a centering pass. Person's shot, however, could not find the height needed as it rolled into Read's arms.
Texas State will wrap up the home portion of its schedule on Sunday on Senior Day, when its hosts Lamar at 1:00 p.m. Coming into play Friday night, the Bobcats and Cardinals were tied for second in the Southland Conference.
