San Marcos, Texas – Senior Tony Bishop dominated the floor tonight, coming off the bench and scoring 20 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and two blocks to lead Texas State (8-11, 3-2 SLC) men's basketball to a 73-62 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (7-13, 2-4 SLC) at home.
Bishop notched his fourth double-double of the season and 12th double figure performance. Senior Cameron Johnson just missed a double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Senior Ryan White tallied 20 points (all in the second half) and five assists, while junior John Bowman had 10 points.
Texas State led by as many as 11 points in the second half on seven occasions. The Bobcats ended the game on a 10-6 run, with all 10 points coming from the charity stripe. White led the way making 7 of 8 attempts, after being intentionally fouled by the Islanders. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi came to within seven points with 1:22 remaining on the clock, but the Bobcats were clutch at the line connecting on 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch.
J.B. Conley scored Texas State's first six points of the game, including a slam dunk to kick things off. The Bobcats biggest lead of the half came when a layup by Bishop extended the margin to nine points (16-7) with 10:47 left in the half. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got a nine-point outing from Demond Watt to help the Islanders tie the game at 25-All at halftime. Bishop led all scorers at the half with 10 points.
Demond Watt led the Islanders with 20 points and 12 boards. Garland Judkins had 12 points, Terence Jones scored 11 and Justin Reynolds added 10 points.
The win gave Texas State its first win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi since February 20, 2008, snapping a four-game losing streak to the Islanders. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi continues to look for their first road win of the season, after the loss tonight marked its ninth straight.
Texas State will travel to Arlington, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 29 to play UT Arlington at 7 p.m. at Texas Hall. The Mavericks are currently 9-9, 3-2 in conference play. The Mavericks are led by LaMarcus, who is averaging 13.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
