Edinburg, Texas – The Texas State volleyball team defeated UT Pan American in straight sets on Monday evening for the team's sixth win in the 2010 season. The Bobcats won 3-0 for the fourth time this season as they improved to 6-5 overall.
With the loss, UT Pan American drops its 10th consecutive match in moving to 1-11 this season.
Texas State jumped out to leads in all three sets and never looked back as the team won going away in each stanza. The Bobcats took the opening set, 25-16, before finishing off the Broncs 25-14 in each of the next two sets.
The team increased its hitting percentage in each of the three sets on Monday night. After tallying a .258 clip in the opening set, the Bobcats hit .320 in the second set and .440 in the third to close out the victory. Texas State finished with a .333 hitting percentage and also limited its opponent to just a .049 hitting percentage for the match.
The Bobcats featured a very deep attack against UT Pan American as 10 different players had at least one kill. Freshman Preslie Alexander led the team with 12 kills, while AJ Watlington added nine. Fresh off of being named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Amber Calhoun had six kills as the team totaled 40 total kills for the match.
Settings duties were split between senior Shelbi Irvin and sophomore Caleigh McCorquodale. Both had the opportunity to run the offense for a set before they both played in the final period. Irvin finished the match with 15 assists, and McCorquodale added 10.
Texas State held a narrow 5.0-4.0 advantage in blocks for the match, led by Madeline Gaffney who had three block assists in two sets of action. Alexander paced the back row defense with six digs, while McCorquodale had five and Erica Dryden added four.
The Bobcats also held a five-two advantage in service aces. Alexander had a pair of aces, and McCorquodale, Rachel James and Melinda Cave each had one.
With the win, Texas State improved to 24-1 all-time against UT Pan American.
The Bobcats return to action this weekend when they travel to Tucson, Ariz., for a tournament at the University of Arizona.
