Cancun, Mexico – Cameron Johnson led Texas State in scoring for the third straight game, as the senior forward netted a season-high 24 points in the Bobcats 79-68 win over Appalachian State in its second game of the ESPN Cancun Governor's Cup at the Poliforum Benito Juarez.
Johnson also recorded eight rebounds, while Matt Staff scored a season-high 12 points and Ryan White added 10 points, six assists and four steals.
Texas State nailed 10 free throws in the last 4:23 seconds to come away with its first neutral victory of the season. Tonight was also the first meeting between the two teams.
The Mountaineers started the second half out on a 5-0 run, but Texas State would soon have an answer as it outscored Appalachian State 11-6 on the next set of possessions bringing the score to 51-43 with 15:03 left on the clock.
With things seeming to go in favor of Texas State on the offensive side of the ball, the Bobcats were able to take a 10-point lead on a jumper by Bishop to bring the score to 55-45 with 13:24 to go. Texas State continued to produce in the paint as Staff and Bishop led Texas State on another run to extend the Bobcats lead to 61-48.
Texas State went down 4-0 to start the game, but a pair of free throws by White cut the Mountaineers lead to two, before Eddie Rios nailed a jumper to tie the game at 4-All. With both teams trading points for the next few possessions, Texas State went on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 19-18 in favor of Appalachian State; which forced the Mountaineers to call a timeout after seeing their lead dwindle.
A pair of free throws by Jonathan Sloan gave Texas State its first lead of the game with 7:58 left on the clock. The Bobcats saw themselves down by five, when they went on a 7-0 run to go up 27-25 against the Mountaineers.
The Bobcats went on to end the first half on a 6-0 run which started with a pair of free throws by Staff, followed by a layup and dunk by Johnson to go into intermission with a 38-32 edge over Appalachian State.
Texas State will play Northeastern tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. It will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
