San Marcos, Texas – Texas State extended its unbeaten streak to five matches, Friday night, beating Nicholls 4-0 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. With the win the Bobcats are 10-5-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Southland Conference.
Texas State got on the board in the 10th minute when Erica Michaud got a crossing pass from Britney Curry and put it in the corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the first 45 minutes was dominated by the Bobcats' offensive attack, outshooting the Colonels 7-4, with a 4-0 lead in corner kicks.
Texas State made it a 2-0 lead when Curry got a leading pass from Michaud and turned it into a breakaway, for her team-leading 12th goal of the year.
After more pressure throughout the half, the Bobcats made it 3-0 in the 84th minute when Taylor Kelly got a pass and got past the keeper who was challenging outside the box.
Kendell Webber ended the scoring in the 87th minute when she was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick which she converted for her first of the year.
In goal Natalie Gardini posted her second straight shutout, improving her record to 2-0-1. In her three starts, she has a goal against average of just 0.31.
The win gives Texas State its third straight season with 10 or more wins, the longest such streak in program history.
“When you have a game on Sunday that's a big rivalry, it can be hard to keep your focus on this one,” head coach Kat Conner said. “Nicholls came in with a great game plan, they're much improved from last year. We had to raise our game at halftime and I thought the ladies responded.”
Next up for the Bobcats will be rival Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday. Last year the Lions eliminated Texas State in the SLC Tournament Championship game 2-0. Following the game will be a senior day presentation recognizing the accomplishments of Britney Curry, Jessica Elting, Anna Fagan and Ashley Gowda.
