Box Score
Beaumont, Texas - Despite playing with just 10 players the last 65:33 of the game, the Texas State women's soccer team (8-5-1, 2-1-1 SLC) came away with a 1-1 tie against Lamar on the road, Friday night in Beaumont.
The first half was a defensive struggle with neither team being able to score. Texas State's best scoring opportunity in the first half came when Lauren Lewis intercepted a pass and had a breakaway. Unfortunately, the Lamar goalie came out of the box and was able to knock the ball away from Lewis as she entered the 18-yard box.
Defensively in the first 45 minutes Natalie Gardini, making her first start of the year in goal, was instrumental in the Bobcats' defensive effort, using her 5-11 frame to jump up and intercept numerous crossing attempts.
Early in the second half Texas State just missed on another prime scoring chance as Kelsey Bernard had a free kick just outside the box that hit off the crossbar and went over the back line.
Lewis was able to redeem herself in the second half, taking the ball out of a group of players and getting around the defense to send it into the corner of the net for the first goal of the game.
The Cardinals tied it a minute later when Cardinal forward Loma Maudley got a loose ball and shot it in over the head of Gardini.
The rest of the half was a defensive struggle with regulation ending in a 1-1 tie.
In the first overtime, Texas State and Lamar each had a pair of shots, but there was no score.
In the last 10 minutes, Gardino fell on a pair of loose balls in front of the net to give her 10 saves for the game.
The Bobcats will return to action on Sunday at 1:00 in Lake Charles, La., as they take on McNeese State.
