Boko Team Secures Impressive Third Place Finish Among 19 Competitors at NCA Collegiate Mascot Competition

Hard work, dedication and heart define the members of the Boko team at Texas State. They consistently serve their community while meeting the demands of athletic appearances and supporting every sporting event throughout the season. This year, their commitment paid off as they earned the opportunity to qualify for and compete in the prestigious NCA College Mascot Championship, going head-to-head with some of the most seasoned competitors in the nation.

The competition featured a 90 second skit in which mascots perform to a custom mix of music and sounds to enhance their performances and are evaluated across several categories, including characterization, prop use, creativity, storytelling and dance. Many of the teams they faced have spent years competing at this competition and have a deep understanding of how to maximize each scoring category. That experience makes Boko’s third place finish even more impressive, as this marked their very first appearance in the competition.

Their journey began as a shared vision, sparked during a team brainstorming session in November when they voted on a Las Vegas inspired theme for their skit. “Viva Las Boko” was born, and from that moment, the team got to work designing and building every detail from the ground up.

Their creativity came to life through an impressive lineup of props, including a slot machine, a moving “Welcome to Fabulous Daytona” sign styled as a tribute to the iconic Las Vegas welcome sign, a feathered Vegas showgirl quick change outfit, a customized suitcase, an oversized magician’s hat and specially designed playing cards. Each piece was thoughtfully crafted, contributing to one of the most dynamic and visually striking prop collections in the competition.

The team was led by Graduate Assistant Mascot Coach Cam Landry, Head Cheer Coach Ryan Riley, Assistant Cheer Coach L.S. McClain and Assistant Cheer Coach and Mascot Operations Manager Minni Rodriguez. Alongside this leadership, the Boko team was heavily directed by their captain, senior Sophia Robinson. Robinson’s dedication to achieving the team’s goals by channeling members’ creativity effectively and ensuring deadlines are met upheld high personal standards and expectations of what the group could accomplish. Through grit, revision, studying the game and many hours spent outside of practice, the Boko team pieced together an unforgettable performance. Without the vision and direction of both Robinson and coach Landry, the dream of competing would not have become a reality.

Every member of the Boko team played a vital role in their success, not just the performer in the suit. This five-member ensemble elevated the standard for the Boko program at Texas State, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire future team members for years to come.
