Texas State Sprints Shine on Opening Day of NCAA West Regional First Round

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— Texas State track & field opened competition Wednesday at the NCAA Division I West First Round Championships at John McDonnell Field, hosted by the University of Arkansas.

The opening day was highlighted by Texas State's men's sprint group, which produced five quarterfinal qualifiers for Friday's competition. The top three finishers in each heat, along with the next six fastest times overall, advanced to the quarterfinal round.

The top 12 finishers in Friday's quarterfinals will qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, scheduled for June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Freshman Ja'Shaun Lloyd opened the day by advancing in the 110-meter hurdles after clocking 13.50 seconds to place second in his heat and earn an automatic qualifying spot. Lloyd later advanced in the 100 meters with a wind-aided time of 10.19 seconds, finishing 11th overall in the preliminary round.

Senior Drew Donley also secured spots in two quarterfinal events. Donley advanced in the 100 meters with a wind-legal time of 10.25 seconds, finishing 22nd overall to earn one of the final qualifying positions. He later posted a time of 20.69 seconds in the 200 meters to finish 13th overall and advance to Friday's quarterfinal.

Mihajlo Katanic added another quarterfinal berth for the Bobcats in the 400-meter hurdles, tying his personal-best time of 50.48 seconds to finish 11th overall in the field.

Friday's quarterfinal schedule includes the 110-meter hurdles at 6:15 p.m., the 100 meters at 6:35 p.m., the 400-meter hurdles at 7:25 p.m. and the 200 meters at 7:50 p.m.

In the field events, Manfred Mannamaa narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the men's hammer throw. Mannamaa recorded a mark of 64.73 meters to place 16th overall, finishing four spots shy of a national qualifying position.

Freshman Adam Carter also competed in the men's shot put and recorded a personal-best mark of 18.23 meters (59-9.75) to finish 20th overall. Carter's throw set a new Texas State freshman record, although he did not advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

The men's pole vault competition, originally scheduled for Wednesday evening, was postponed due to inclement weather and moved to Thursday at 2:40 p.m.

The NCAA West First Round continues Thursday morning with the women's hammer throw beginning at 9:00 a.m.
