Texas State Men, Women Both Sit in Top Three After Day One of SBC Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Texas State track & field opened competition Monday at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex with a strong showing on day one.

The Bobcat women currently lead the team standings with 36 points, while the men sit in second place with 35.5 points heading into the final day of competition.

Day one was highlighted by a conference title from Elisabet Runarsdottir in the women's weight throw. Runarsdottir captured gold with a mark of 20.62 meters, which ranks seventh all-time in Texas State history. 

Melanie Duron placed 10th in the weight throw with a mark of 16.45m, while Sophia Haberer finished 19th at 14.94m.

Texas State also earned a silver medal in the men's long jump, where Chris Preddie placed second with a mark of 7.65 meters. 

Giovonni Walker added a fifth-place finish (7.26m), and Isaiah Kayembe took sixth (7.16m) to contribute valuable team points.

On the track, Alexia Macias finished fourth in the women's 5000 meters with a time of 16:47.85, setting a new Texas State program record in the event. 

The men's 5000 meters also featured a strong showing from the Bobcats, as Omar Guzman placed fourth (14:37.67), Jack Deelman finished fifth (14:39.77) and Ivan Guzman took seventh (14:44.82).

Texas State's women's distance medley relay team secured a runner-up finish in 11:45.54, the second-fastest time in program history. The men's distance medley relay placed fifth with a time of 10:15.51.

Several Bobcats advanced through preliminary rounds on day one. Abigail Parra qualified for the women's 800-meter final with a time of 2:14.00, while teammate Kila Rodas advanced on time at 2:14.18. 

Parra, Alexia Tiscareno Macias and Kimberly Gloria each secured qualifying spots in the women's mile preliminaries.

In the sprints, Paige Archer advanced to the finals in both the women's 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. 

On the men's side, Ja'Shaun Lloyd qualified in both the 60m and 200m, while Arveyon Davis, Ty'Shaun Lloyd and Aiden Sheffield advanced in the 60-meter prelims. 

Lloyd, Joshua Taylor, Davis and Philip Reed also moved through prelims in the men's 60-meter hurdles to advance to the finals.

Multi-events produced additional highlights for Texas State. Sophie Daugard finished second in the pentathlon with 3,901 points, the second-best performance in program history, and also placed eighth in the women's long jump (5.81m). 

Easton Hammond and David Richards posted solid early marks in the heptathlon competitions.

The Sun Belt Indoor Championships conclude Tuesday with finals across track and field events.
