Women's Basketball Starts New Year at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Virginia — Texas State women's basketball returns to Sun Belt action on January 3 at 1 pm (CT) against the James Madison Dukes to kick off the new year.
 
Texas State enters the week with a 6-6 record and a perfect 2-0 mark in Sun Belt play after wins vs Louisiana and ULM to start the year. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ for fans to tune in. 
 
 ABOUT THE DUKES
  • James Madison enters the week with an 10-5 record on the year, having gone 2-1 in Sun Belt play so far. 
  • The Dukes are led by head coach Sean O'Reagan who is in his 10th season leading the program. He has a 220-86 record in his tenure. 
  • Reigning player of the year Peyton McDaniel leads the team in points with 18.1 per night and is one of the team's best rebounders with 7.3 a night.
  • Leading the boards for the Dukes is Ashanti Barnes who averaged 9.5 rebounds with her 14.7 points per night.
SERIES HISTORY VS JAMES MADISON
  • Texas State is 0-3 all-time against James Madison.
  • Texas State lost 81-60 in the last meeting between the two teams on Jan. 4, 2025, in San Marcos. 
  • Before that, the team's last meeting was in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship in 2023 when James Madison won 81-51.
ABOUT THE BOBCATS
  • The Freshmen: Texas State has added two freshmen, Angela Carroll and Kaliyah Murphy.
  • The Transfers: Texas State has added seven transfers, including three Division I transfers. 
  • The Returners: Antoine returns four members from 2024-2025 to this year's team.
    • Saniya Burks leads the returners for minutes played and points scored last year as she enters her sophomore season. She started the season with a nations-best 34 points against Ohio and has double digits in eight of 12 games so far this season.
    • Taleiyah Gibbs played in 25 games for the Bobcats last season off the bench and returns for her junior season as well.
    • Also returning are Mia Galbraith who missed the year with an ACL injury, and Takeira Ramey who missed the latter half of last season with an ACL injury.
UP NEXT
  • The Bobcats will continue its three-game road swing at Troy on Jan. 7 and at Louisiana on Jan. 10. The game at Troy will tipoff at 6 pm and Louisiana at 3 pm. Both will be streamed on ESPN+. Texas State will then return home for its annual Kids Game on Jan. 14 vs Southern Miss at 11 a.m. in Strahan Arena.
