Box Score SAN MARCOS, Texas – Despite a 16-point night from
Jaylin Foster, Texas State women's basketball suffered a 72-62 loss to the second best team in the Sun Belt, Arkansas State, on Saturday afternoon.
Foster's 16 and
Ja'Mia Harris' 11 points led the Bobcats on the night while Foster also led with seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Bobcats got off to a slow start that allowed the Red Wolves to go up 15-5 ahead of the first media timeout. From there, Texas State was able to match points through the tail end of the first quarter to keep it close, going into the second quarter trailing 20-11.
Crystal Smith led with five points for the Bobcats in the first.
The Bobcats improved defensively in the second quarter, limiting Arkansas State to just 12 points on 4-11 shooting, including 0-6 from beyond the arc. The Red Wolves also had eight turnovers in the second quarter alone. Texas State matched the Red Wolves 12 points to make it a 32-23 scoreline headed into halftime.
Texas State improved its shooting in the third, shooting 8-16 while knocking down five of six free throws. They outscored Arkansas State 22-20 to make a dent in the deficit they needed to overcome from the first half. At the end of the third, though, the team fell into a scoring drought and Texas State trailed 52-45.
The Bobcats fought back in the fourth, narrowing the Red Wolves lead to as few as two just before the media time out. Despite the 56-54 scoreline at the media timeout, the Red Wolves went on a 16-9 run to end the game and get the win over the Bobcats. Despite Foster battling for seven points in the final quarter, Texas State would fall 72-62.
Texas State is now 10-15 on the season and 4-10 in Sun Belt play.
