NEW ORLEANS – Three Texas State soccer players were named to one of the All-Sun Belt Conference teams, as announced by the league office on Sunday. Both
Helen Alormenu and
Victoria Meza were first team selections and
Mady Soumare was picked to the second team.
It is the second straight year that the Bobcats have had three all-conference honorees. This is the first season in which the program has had multiple first team picks since 2019.
Alormenu finished the regular season second on the team with five goals, four assists and 14 points. She paced the squad with 33 shots while putting 12 on frame in 1,171 minutes of action. During Sun Belt play, the sophomore scored twice, both being match-tying tallies against Georgia State and Louisiana, while assists on the match-winning goals at Georgia Southern and versus Troy.
The Accra, Ghana native opened the campaign with two goals and one assist against Our Lady of the Lake. She followed with an assist at Incarnate Word. On Aug. 20, Alormenu scored off a free kick to give TXST an early lead at Texas A&M.
Meza, the conference's preseason Midfielder of the Year, shifted to the backline due to injuries. She played in the first seven conference matches before missing the last three due to nation team duty at the Central American Games. The El Salvadorian was on the pitch for 1,032 minutes and played all 90 minutes seven times, six of which occurred during conference play.
She ended the regular season with three goals and three assists while taking 21 shots and placing 10 on target. Against Sun Belt foes, Meza scored twice with one being the match-tying tally at ULM and the other the lone goal of a 1-0 victory over Troy. The junior added two assists in conference action with both coming on tying goals during contests versus Georgia Southern and Louisiana.
Soumare paced the Bobcats with six goals and added three assists to total 15 points. She attempted 28 shots with 22 of them being on goal for a team-high .786 SOG%. For the third consecutive season, the Parisian tallied three match-winning goals with all of them coming in Sun Belt action.
In conference play, Soumare recorded either a goal or an assist in seven of the contests to finish with five goals and three assists. She played a part in all five of Texas State's goals over a four-match stretch from Sept. 18 to Oct. 2.
The all-conference honor is the second of Soumare's career after picking up first team honors last season. It is the first time being named to one of the All-Sun Belt teams for both Alormenu and Meza.
Monday sees the Bobcats take on the No. 5 seed James Madison in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championship at the Foley Sports Complex. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
