Texas State Alumna Announced to Canadian Olympic Team

Anicka Newell will compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the women's pole vault

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Former Texas State track and field member and Texas State alumna Anicka Newell was nominated to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Team Canada announced yesterday.
 
Newell qualified for the Canadian Olympic team in the pole vault after finishing second in the event at the Bell track and field trials. At the trials she recorded a mark of 4.38m, which was her 8th-best mark of the season. 
 
This marks the third time in her career that she will represent Canada in the Olympic games. She first qualified for the Olympics in 2016 and competed in Rio de Janeiro, where she posted a mark of 4.15m in the qualifying round. 
 
Her second Olympic appearance came in 2021, when she competed in the pole vault at the Tokyo Olympics. She made it to the finals of the event after recording a mark of 4.55m in the qualifying round. 
 
During her time with the Texas State track and field team from 2012-15, was a two-time champion in the pole vault at the Sun Belt Outdoor Conference Championships and earned second team All-American honors, after placing 15th at the 2015 NCAA Championships. 
 
The qualifying round for the pole vault at the 2024 Paris Olympics is set to take place Aug. 5 at 3:40 p.m. and a full schedule can be found here.
