Runarsdottir Crowned NCAA Women's Hammer Throw Champion

Elisabet Runarsdottir became the first Bobcat to win an individual title in 28 years

EUGENE, Ore. - Elisabet Runarsdottir was crowned the NCAA National Champion in the women's hammer throw to begin day two of the National Championship meet. Runarsdottir became the first Texas State athlete in 29 years to win an individual title at the National Championships and became the first Texas State athlete to win the title in the hammer throw.

Her winning mark of 70.47m/231-2 came on her third throw, which set the tone going into the final three throws of the competition. She was the only athlete in the field to record a mark over 70 meters, which she did twice during the event. Her second throw over 70 meters occurred on her fourth attempt and registered at 70.00m/229-8.

Her new personal-record mark of 70.47m/231-2 bested her previous Icelandic National record of 70.33m/226-9, registered as the 7th-best throw in Texas State history and was the best mark in all of the NCAA this season.

Runarsdottir continues her quest to qualify for Iceland's Olympic team this Sunday, when she will compete at the European Championships in Rome, Italy.

Lara Roberts, the No.1 freshman in the nation for the women's hammer throw, earned Second Team All-American honors, after she placed 14th overall with a mark of 63.06m/206-11.

Roberts ended her freshman year as the No. 1 ranked freshman in the country, with her PR mark of 67.40m/221-1 that she recorded at the NCAA West Prelims.

The women's 4x100 relay team of Kaylee Lewis, Ma'Khi Falkquay, Kerris Roberts and Taejha Badal made history on day two of the meet, as they were the first women's 4x1 to compete at Nationals in Texas State history.

They did however earn Honorable Mention All-American honors and recorded a time of 44.03, which was the second-fastest time in school history for the event.

The relay team set the school record at the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Arkansas, when they recorded a 43.85 in the quarterfinal round.
