Bobcats Earn 5th Straight Win

Texas State beat New Mexico State 6-1

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women's tennis defeated New Mexico State 6-1 on Friday, to earn its fifth win of the season and improve their win streak to five in a row. This victory marks the first time in 10 years the women's tennis team has won five consecutive matches.

"Really proud of the way the team responded, especially after having a rough start in the doubles," said Texas State women's tennis head coach Kendall Brooks. "They turned it around and were definitely a force to be reckoned with. The energy on and off the court was great, and that's what college tennis is all about. So, it was fun to watch them do their thing and be a part of it today."

New Mexico State secured the lone doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead, despite only being able to field two doubles pairs. The Bobcats bounced back from losing the doubles point and secured all six singles points.

Doubles
Playing in the No. 1 spot Mae McCutcheon and Jadeh Chan dropped their doubles match 6-0 against NMSU's Anna Pinaieva and Natsuki Nishimura, who were 3-3 on the season coming into the match.

The doubles point came down to court two, where Sofia Fortuno and Maria Lora were featured. Despite their efforts, Fortuno and Lora lost their match 6-1 and New Mexico State earned the lone doubles point. This marks the first time in four doubles matches the pair has lost.

On Court three, Emma Carr and Emily Niers won by forfeit due to NMSU not having enough players to field a third doubles pair.

Singles
The Bobcats earned the first singles point due to the Aggies not having a player available to face Jacqueline Schnabel on court six.

Emily Niers got the Bobcats rolling in singles and secured the second point for the Bobcats on court three. Niers won in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 and tallied her third singles win in a row.

Sofia Fortuno finished right behind Niers on court two. Fortuno defeated Whitney Moon in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 and earned the Bobcats their third singles point. Fortuno is now on a three-match win streak and sits 5-2 on the year.

The Bobcats secured the last point needed to win the match when Andrea Pineda defeated her opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Pineda has won her last five singles matches and moves to 6-1 on the season.

Following the lead of her other three teammates Callie Creath, on court two, earned another victory in straight sets when she defeated NMSU's Natsuki Nishimura 6-3, 6-4.

The first court featured Kiana Graham who was making her return to action after not playing in the match versus Lamar. Graham got out to an early lead over NMSU's No. 1 Anna Pinaieva by winning the first set 6-4, but her match was cut short when her opponent retired during the second set. This earned the Bobcats the final singles point and completed the sweep.
