SAN MARCOS, Texas – Three Texas State Volleyball players, Sam Wunsch,
Bailey Hanner and
Maggie Walsh, were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
This is Hanner's second Academic-All District award, with Wunsch and Walsh earning their first awards.
The Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To qualify for the Academic All-District and All-American teams, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, hold a minimum cumulative 3.50 GPA and have competed in at least 90% of the team's competitions or started 66% of the institution's matches.
Wunsch started in all 31 matches for the Bobcats and was a First Team All-Conference selection in the Sun Belt. She was named to the SBC All-Tournament team after the Bobcats Championship run and was a two-time SBC Player of the Week. Wunsch's 3.74 kills per set was among the best in the Sun Belt as she averaged 4.20 points per set this year. She swung effectively at .301 this season and was heavily involved both offensively and defensively for the Bobcats. She was one of the team's best hitters while contributing heavily to the Bobcats 2.48 blocks per set, tallying 0.95 blocks per set in conference play. That, paired with her excellence in the classroom as she works towards a bachelor's degree in Geography and Environmental Studies. She was also named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List.
Hanner also started in all 31 matches for the Bobcats. Hanner was heavily involved on both sides of the ball with 219 kills, 37 digs and 99 blocks. She swung for .259 while tallying her 219 kills. That, and she was one of four Bobcats this season to tally 250+ points, which she had 286.5. She averaged 2.75 points per set. She also contributed heavily to the Bobcats nearly 2.5 blocks a set, with just shy of a block a set herself. In the classroom, Hanner is working towards a degree in Advertising. She was also named to the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's list this year, the second time in her career she has earned that accolade.
Walsh started in 27 matches for the Bobcats this season, tallying 172.5 points. She contributed 196 digs for an average of 2.11 per set while also adding on 136 kills, 30 blocks, and was on the receiving side of 433 serves. She also served 21 aces. Walsh had four nights with double-digit kills including a season-high 14 versus Texas Southern in the opening weekend of the season. She was named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List for 2024. Walsh is working towards a degree in advertising.
