Women's Basketball is Back in Strahan Arena this Week

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State women's basketball returns home for two games this week. Wednesday's game will be the first time the Bobcats are hosting Old Dominion inside Strahan Arena. The Bobcats will host the Monarchs on Wednesday morning before seeing South Alabama on Saturday.

SERIES HISTORY
  • The Bobcats won the lone meeting between them and Old Dominion in the 2022-23 season. Texas State won 52-46 in Norkfolk on Jan. 26, 2023.
  • The series with South Alabama is split 13-4 in favor of the Bobcats. The Bobcats won the last meeting between the two schools on Jan. 25 by a 63-44 score line.  
MEET THE ROSTER
  • Ja'Niah Henson came to Texas State after four years at Morgan State. She's averaging 15.0 points per game, the most of any Bobcat. In the Bobcats game against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, she scored her 1000th career point as well. She is among the best free-throw shooters in the nation, shooting 90.9% from the line.
  • Gara Beth Self transferred to Texas State after playing four years at ULM. She and Henson are co-captain for the Bobcats.
  • The Bobcats also brought in Western Kentucky transfer Jaylin Foster. Both Foster and Self have been consistent members of the starting five for the Bobcats in each of the games so far this season.
  • Tiffany Tullis and Crystal Smith join the Bobcats after two years at Blinn Junior College where the pair reached the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship tournament. Tullis has started in all the Bobcats games so far this season.
  • The Bobcats had four players returning to the team this season including seniors Sierra DicksonNicole Leff and Morgan Hill. Dickson and Leff are the only seniors on the roster who have played their full four years at Texas State. Additionally, sophomore Kennedy Claybrooks is amongst the returners. Morgan Hill is in her second season with the Bobcats after transferring from ULM.
  • The Bobcats also have two freshman, Julia Coleman and Emillia Steele
ABOUT THE MONARCHS
  • The Monarchs are 14-5 this season, 6-3 in conference play and are 5th in the Sun Belt Conference so far.
  • Leading the way for the Monarch's is head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones who is in her 4th season with the program. She has a 73-38 record all-time with the program.
  • En'Dya Buford leads the scoring for the Monarchs averaging 11.6 points per night. 
  • Simone Cunningham leads the boards for the Monarchs, averaging 6.6 a game.
ABOUT THE JAGUARS
  • The Jaguars are 7-14 season, 0-9 in conference play and are 14th in the Sun Belt Conference.
  • Leading the way for the Jaguars is head coach Yolisha Jackson who is in her 1st season with the program. She has a 7-14 record all-time with the program.
  • Kelsey Thompson leads the scoring for the Jaguars with 11.9 a game. She's also good for 4.5 rebounds a night.
  • Leading the boards for South Alabama is Zena Elias who is averaging 7.5 rebounds a game.
RANKINGS & RECORDS
  • Ja'Niah Henson is second in the Sun Belt Conference and 9th in the nation for her free throw shooting. The graduate student is 70-77 from the line this season for a .909 shooting percentage. 
  • Henson is also 9th in the Sun Belt for her 15.0 point per game average.
  • The Bobcats are the second best three-point shooting team in the Sun Belt Conference, shooting 33.8% from beyond the arc.
  • Texas State is also among the best defenses in the Bobcats, the second best in the conference while allowing opponents just 60.7 points a night.
 
WHATS ON THE HORIZON? 
  • The rest of the way will be conference play with the exception of the Bobcats Feb. 10 matchup with Ohio as a part of the second leg of the MAC-SBC Challenge. The Bobcats will go to Athens to face Ohio in a 'Battle of the Bobcats.' The game will tip at noon (CT) and be streamed on ESPN+.
  • The Bobcats will play four straight road games, including the MAC-SBC Challenge game versus Ohio, before returning home. The 'Cats will see Coastal Carolina, Troy and Southern Miss on the road.
  • The team's next home game is Feb. 21 versus Marshall at 7 p.m. inside Strahan Arena.
