KJ Johnson Named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference offices announced Tuesday morning that Texas State outside hitter KJ Johnson was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week. Texas State volleyball opened the season with two wins against Marist College and UT Martin, with Johnson at the forefront of those two matches.

"I'm so glad KJ is getting recognized for the performance she put on last weekend," said Head Coach Sean Huiet. "For an outside hitter to have over 4.5 kills and hit a .425 in three matches is big time. I love how she is playing and helping lead this team."

The Pearland native played a key role in the Bobcats' two wins with her heavy hitting. She hit .425 through the three games of the weekend, with a high of .609 (14-0-23) when the team swept Marist College in the season opener.

Johnson posted 41 kills over three games for an average of 4.5 per set. She had a team-high 20 kills in the Bobcats' 3-0 win over UT Martin to close the weekend. She was responsible for 43 points through the Bobcats three matches and was named to the Tennessee Classic All-Tournament team.

This is Johnson's first Sun Belt Player of the Week Award in her career at Texas State.

Catch the Bobcats in action as they host North Texas in their season opener on Aug. 31. The match, slated for a 6:30 p.m. start time inside Strahan Arena, will be the first of the 2023 Texas State Invitational. The Bobcats will also host #13 Houston on Sept. 2 at 4 p.m..
