SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State right-handed pitcher
Levi Wells was selected in the fourth round with the 118th overall pick by the Baltimore Orioles on Monday in the 2023 MLB Draft. He is the fourth highest drafted Bobcat in program history and the fifth to be taken in the top five rounds.
Â
The La Porte, Texas native was an All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team selection this past season after striking out 98 and posting an 8-4 record in team-high 80.2 innings. He recorded three double-digit strikeout performances including a career-high 13 against Marshall while tossing a complete game.
Â
Wells claimed All-Sun Belt First Team honors in 2022 in which he went 8-3 with a 3.07 ERA and 86 strikeouts over 91.0 innings. He tossed all nine innings at App State for his first career complete game and also struck out 10 at ULM in six scoreless innings. The right-handed punched out six in seven innings to pick up the victory and send the Bobcats to the finals of the Stanford Regional as well.
Â
Last time a Texas State player was taken in the top five rounds was Kyle Kubitza in 2011 when he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the third round. Wells is the third Bobcat to be drafted by the Orioles, joining Donnie Hart (2013) and Lucas Humpal (2016).
