Men, Women Finish Second at 2023 Sun Belt Outdoor Championships

The Bobcats won 7 individual titles on the final day

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Texas State men's and women's track and field both finished runner-up at the 2023 Sun Belt Outdoor Championships while the Bobcats claimed seven individual titles on the meet's final day on Saturday at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

The second-place finishes for the Texas State men and women were their best place in the Sun Belt outdoor championships since 2019.

"The Bobcats are coming together as a team with many great individual performances," said Texas State Director of Track and Field/Cross Country John Frazier. "Our veterans did a great job with their contributions, and five of our freshmen were on the podium with two championships."

A weekend that included nine individual championships and 24 podium finishes, the Bobcats saved their biggest day for last as they combined for seven individual titles on Saturday. The women's 4x100 relay broke a school record – a mark set earlier this season – to win the conference championship while two other relay teams in the men's 4x100 and 4x400 also claimed titles. The men's 4x400 championship marked the third year in a row that the Bobcats won that event.

High-point scorers Dominick Yancy and Taahir Kelly – who both scored 23 points in the meet to share the top scorer crown for the men's side – finished 1-2 in the men's 200 and 400s, with Kelly winning the 200 and Yancy claiming the 400. The 200-meter title for Kelly was his first individual championship in his Texas State career. For Yancy, it was his second straight outdoor 400 conference championship.

Both Yancy and Kelly ran on the title-winning 4x1 and 4x4 relays as well. The two now each have nine total Sun Belt gold medals in indoor and outdoor in their individual and relay careers.

Yancy and Kelly also became the first Bobcat men to win the high-point scorer award at the conference outdoor meet since 2013.

Sedrickia Wynn added to her conference gold medal count as well – which now stands at five in her career – as she won the women's 100 and 200. She ran 11.28 in the 100 finals to set a facility record and register the second-fastest time ever by a Bobcat in the event. It was the fastest 100 time in 21 years for Texas State. Wynn also ran a wind-aided 23.06 (+3.2) in the 200 to win the event.

Wynn, who ran on the women's 4x1, also finished third in the women's 100 hurdles (13.33w, +3.4) as she scored 28.5 points for the Bobcats.

Texas State had five runner-up finishes, including Kelly in the 400 and Yancy in the 200, on Saturday. Freshman Chris Preddie placed second in the men's triple jump with a personal-best 15.31 meters/50-2.75 while Katherine Stuckly ended her final career conference meet with a second-place finish in the women's high jump with a height of 1.76 meters/5-9.25. Freshman Utitofon Sam finished second in the women's discus with a personal-best throw of 52.44 meters/172-0.

Ashton Callahan reached the podium in the men's 100 meter dash as he ran a wind-aided 10.26 (+2.5) to place third. The time tied the second-fastest time in school history.

Freshman Aiden Hayes placed third in the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.08 meters/6-9.75. It was his second-best high jump of the season.

The Bobcats will continue their season with the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, Calif. from May 24-27. More than 20 Bobcats are currently in the qualifying standard in their respective events, but the official participants are scheduled to be announced on May 18.
