SAN MARCOS, Texas – Melanie Duron set a freshman school record in the women's shot put and the men's 4x100 relay of
Bervensky Pierre,
Ashton Callahan,
Daniel Harrold and
Dominick Yancy had the second-fastest time in school history as Texas State completed the Charles Austin Classic on Saturday at the Texas State Track and Field Complex.
Duron and the men's 4x1's finishes helped give the Bobcats 10 first-place entries on day two of the two-day meet. Texas State had 16 overall first-place finishes in the meet.
Duron's throw of 17.03 meters in the shot put was a freshman record as well as the third-farthest in school history. She is only the second Bobcat to ever clear 17 meters in the event and her mark is now the best by a Sun Belt Conference athlete this season.
The men's 4x100 relay, which reached the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene last June, made its season debut with a time of 39.46 – which was two-tenths off the school record. It was also the fifth-fastest in the country this year.
Other first-place finishes on the track included
Megan Ombres in the women's 1500 meter (4:49.98),
Taahir Kelly in the 400 meter (46.68), and
Dominick Yancy in the 100 meter (10.45).
The Bobcats stood out in the jumps for the second day in a row as
Katherine Stuckly (women's high jump, 1.74 meters),
Aiden Hayes (men's high jump, 2.03 meters), and
Luize Opola (women's triple jump, 11.81 meters) won their respective events.
Other throwers to win their events included freshman
Utitofon Sam in the women's discus (51.37 meters) and
Grady Leonard in the men's shot put (18.59 meters). Sam's mark was a personal-best.
The Bobcats will continue to host meets at home as they will compete in the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos from March 30-April 1. Texas State will also send competitors to the Texas Relays in Austin on March 31-April 1.
