SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas State earned seven first-place finishes and took the entire podium in the men's 200 and women's discus as the Bobcats finished up competing at the two-day UTSA Invitational on Saturday at the Park West Athletics Complex.
Dominick Yancy (21.07, wind-aided),
Ashton Callahan (21.23) and
Taahir Kelly (21.57) finished 1-2-3 in the men's 200 to help the Bobcats grab five of the top-eight spots.
Brian West (22.02) and
Cameron Conyers (22.02) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the women's discus, not only did the Bobcats finish first, second and third, they also grabbed fourth-place to dominate the event. Freshman
Utitofon Sam won with a throw of 48.54 meters/159-3 while
Carly Watts (47.23m/154-11),
Lauryn Small (46.74m/153-4), and
Deborah Bulai (46.57m/152-9) finished 2-3-4, respectively.
Texas State finished with 10 first-place finishes over the entire meet, including three on the first day on Friday. Five of the top finishes were in throws while three were in jumps/pole vault.
Katherine Stuckly, the reigning Sun Belt outdoor women's high jump champion, earned first with a leap of 1.77 meters/5-9.75.
The Bobcats swept the men's and women's pole vault as two newcomers – freshman
Breanna Brandes and junior transfer
Cody Bullard – captured first-place finishes. Brandes topped out at 3.35 meters/10-11.75 while Bullard had a high mark of 4.75 meters/15-7.
Freshman
Chris Preddie captured the first first-place finish of his Texas State career with a leap of 7.16 meters/23-6 in the men's long jump.
Tyler Noles won first place in the men's discus with a throw of 44.87 meters/147-2. It was also Noles' first top finish in a meet in his collegiate career.
The Bobcats return to action with the first of two consecutive home meets. Texas State will host the Charles Austin Classic Thursday-Saturday (March 23-25).
