SAN MARCOS, Texas – A recording setting day took place at Bobcat Ballpark on Sunday as Texas State (3-0) defeated Northwestern (0-3) 24-9 to complete the series sweep. The Bobcats set program records for runs in an opening day series and overall series with 56 and home runs in a game with eight.
Â
"A lot of runs and good things happened. It is hard to do three games in a row," said head coach
Steven Trout. "Offensively, I challenged them today to come out and have great at bats. They came in and had great approaches from the very start to the very end. Medrano also got us off to a good start filling up the strikeout zone."
Â
Seven different players hit a homer on the afternoon. The lone TXST player with multiple round trippers was
Chase Mora. He continued his historic tear to start his college career as he has now hit a home run in each of his three plate appearances. The Tomball, Texas native hit the program tying seventh and record breaking eighth long balls of the contest with his second being a grand slam in the eighth inning.
Â
Â
"It's awesome and an unbelievable moment. I knew going in they were talking about it in the dugout. Just trying to keep it quiet and everything. When I connected with the ball and saw it go out it is a moment I will never forget," said Mora.
Â
Also hitting the ball out of the park was
Jose Gonzalez,
Ryder Hernandez,
Carson Keithley,
Ben McClain,
Daylan Pena and
August Ramirez. It was the first of career home runs for Hernandez and Keithley.
Â
Â
TXST also hit five doubles, two of which came off the bat of
Davis Powell, and two triples with one each from
Kyle Atkinson and Pena.
Â
Mora led the Bobcats with five RBI. Plating three apiece was Gonzalez, Hernandez and Pena while Atkinson, Keithley, McClain and Ramirez finished with two RBI apiece.
Â
On the mound,
Tony Robie (1-0) picked up the win after throwing two scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout.
Nathan Medrano started on the rubber and went three innings and struck out five while surrendering three runs on six hits. Striking out three apiece was
Cameron Bush and
Jack Stroud.
Â
The Bobcats scored in all eight innings they came to the plate. They tallied a high of seven runs in the fourth and put up four runs each in the sixth and eighth. The only frame that did not see Texas State hit a homer was the third when it scored once with the run coming home as Ramirez beat out a grounder for an infield single.
Â
Â
Next for the Bobcats is a three-game series against Oral Roberts. The first game takes place Friday at Bobcat Ballpark with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
