Long Balls and Pitching Propel Bobcats to Series Opening Win

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Two home runs and a strong pitching performance from Triston Dixon and Levi Wells was enough on Friday night for Texas State (4-0) to claim the series opener over Oral Roberts (4-2) Friday evening at Bobcat Ballpark by a score of 3-2.

"What a really good Friday night baseball game. That's how you draw it up, right? Two really good arms and teams battling like crazy," said head coach Steven Trout. "I told the team they deserved to beat us with them having more hits, no errors and only giving up one free 90. But that is how baseball goes. We made two big swings, Levi Wells was who we expected to be on Friday night and then Triston Dixon came in and closed the door."

Wells (2-0) went 6.2 innings with six strikeouts while allowing just one run on six hits to pick up the victory. Triston Dixon came on and threw the final 2.1 frames on his way to earning his first save of the season.

Only three hits were managed by the Bobcats on the night as all of them went for extra bases. Daylan Pena had a double while both Cade Manning and Ben McClain's base knocks left the yard.

Manning put the Bobcats on the board first with an opposite field solo shot to left that was just out of the reach of the leaping outfielder in the second for his first home run of the year.

The Golden Eagles answered back in the next half inning on a Jonah Cox RBI single.

With the score still tied at one entering the bottom of the sixth, Peyton Lewis was able to work a leadoff walk and would move into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Peyton Benesh. Two pitches later, McClain connected with an 0-1 offering that sailed over the right field fence for his second homer of the season.

Two of the first three batters would hit doubles that cut the lead down to a run. Dixon induced a foul out to Lewis and a fly out to Jose Gonzalez in left field to wrap up TXST's fourth straight victory to start the campaign.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from Bobcat Ballpark and can be streamed on ESPN+.
