Erb with Late Match Heroics

SAN MARCOS, Texas – There were late match dramatics Thursday night as all three goals were scored in the final 10 minutes with the last coming from Lily Erb with less than five minutes remaining as Texas State claimed a 2-1 victory over Old Dominion at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.

The victory for the Bobcats moved them to 8-5-3 overall and 3-2-3 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Monarchs fell to 10-2-3 on the season and 5-2-1 in league play. TXST also moved up to eighth in the conference standings and are two points back of a three-way tie for fifth place.

Zoe Junior led Texas State with three shots on the evening and was credited with an assist along with Mya Ulloa. Erb claimed her first career match-winning tally on her second goal of the season.

In goal, Caitlyn Draper made seven saves with four of them coming in the second half.

The first good opportunity for the Bobcats happened just over 12 minutes into the contest when Junior made a tackle at midfield. She dribbled into the box and took a low shot that was smothered by Emily Bredek.

Wimberley Wright sent a perfect through ball down the right side that Annabelle Fisher was able to run onto midway through the 42nd minute. The freshman was able to juke a defender and tried to beat the keeper with a high shot but the ball was caught near the post.

In the second half, Draper made two leaping saves to keep ODU off the scoreboard. The first was early in the 59th minute on an attempt by Madison Micheletti. The Hutto, Texas native's second big stop came late in the 74th minute when Riley Mullen unleashed a shot from just over 20 yards out.

The breakthrough goal came with just under 10 minutes left on the clock as Chloe Jones sent the ball into the box. Ece Turkoglu got her foot on it in the box but redirected it into the goal to put Texas State ahead 1-0.

The lead would be short-lived. Aleigha Arndt sent in a corner kick from the far side that Ashlynn Kulha headed in 86 seconds later to tie the match.

In the 86th minute, an attempted clearance by the Monarchs went wide and Junior won the ball in the air. She sent a pass back into the box from the end line to Ulloa, who passed to an open Erb nearly 10 yards out from goal. The sophomore midfielder hit the ball first touch and popped it just under the bar into the left corner for the go-ahead tally.

Next up for the Bobcats is the final road match of the regular season with a trip to take on South Alabama on Sunday at 1 p.m.
